Caribbean Cruise Lines Are The Most Popular Choice
Planning a Caribbean cruise starts with deciding where you want to sail. Cruises are typically designed to sail either in the eastern or western Caribbean. The companies operating Caribbean cruise lines itineraries offer many first time travelers a standard seven-day voyage in both areas.
Of course the question arises: Which to choose?
Here’s where you need to do a little homework before making a decision and purchasing your tickets.
You might think either choice mirrors the other in types of destination, ports of call, physical activities, dining and entertainment opportunities. The quick answer is that many of the same cruising experiences are available in both western and eastern cruises but there are differences that might influence your decision.
Almost all companies operating a Caribbean cruise line in the eastern area set sail from Florida. From the Sunshine State, ships set sail to eastern Caribbean ports of call that include the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and possibly St. Maarten. The eastern Caribbean is home to fantastic beaches, clear blue waters ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving, plus a great deal of fun filled activities including sailing, surfing, water skiing, fishing and more. The islands in the eastern Caribbean are close together, smaller and most onshore trips are designed to add to a cruiser’s water-based activity.
If you choose a western Caribbean cruise, you might still embark from Florida, but as cruising has increased in popularity, companies operating a Caribbean cruise line have located in Gulf of Mexico ports. Vacation planners can depart to the western Caribbean from places like Mobile, Ala., New Orleans, La. and Galveston, Texas. Ports of call on a western Caribbean cruise itinerary might include many mainland destinations in Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica as well as the large islands of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic/Haiti.
Other popular cruise destinations include Cozumel and Cancun, Mexico. These ports of call are farther apart than their eastern Caribbean counterparts so more time at sea will outweigh time spent ashore. However, longer trips through the western Caribbean can allot voyagers ample time to check out Mayan ruins or hike through Central American rain forests while scuba trips to ancient shipwrecks might make your western Caribbean cruise a perfect vacation choice.
Also, major companies offering Caribbean cruise lines target both the southern and northern Caribbean with varying itineraries.
Although many companies that operate a Caribbean cruise line offering a southern itinerary do embark from Florida or other U.S. mainland ports, the popular seven-day cruise departs from Puerto Rico or Barbados. Islands of call in a southern Caribbean itinerary are too far from the U.S. to visit in one week. Therefore many companies specializing in southern Caribbean cruises disembark from ports like San Juan heading to the smaller, more exotic islands dotting the southern Caribbean Sea. Voyagers can take in the sights visiting St. Bart’s, Antigua, Dominica, Bequia, Grenada and Barbados. Heading farther south visitors can enjoy stops at Aruba, Curacao, the Grand Turks and the northeast coast of South America.
Northern Caribbean cruise would include stops in Bermuda (not actually in the Caribbean Sea), the Bahamas along with the British Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands.
